My journey with the Latinx Choral Project
In April 2023, I was asked to conduct the PPS Latinx Affinity Choir in the world premiere of El Agua de Mi Ser (The Water of My Being), written by Luz Elena Mendoza Ramos, the singer, songwriter and frontwoman of the Portland band Y La Bamba. The choir brought Latino/a/x/e student singers together with adult singers. It showed me how many people in Portland were looking for a place to sing music from their own culture.
It was the first time in over two decades that I led a project centered on this part of my identity, and it was thrilling. That experience changed the course of my career. I knew with certainty that I wanted to invest my knowledge and experience in my Latino/a/x/e community. The project ended that spring, but it set in motion the events that led me to start the Latinx Choral Project.
Instead of waiting for funding to open doors, I invested $2,500 of my own money to get started. In February 2025, I launched the Latinx Choral Project with 20 singers. By June, the choir had grown to more than 60. Together we raised $5,500 to begin the process of becoming a nonprofit, and LCP became a 501(c)(3) in February 2026.
Today, LCP has more than 100 singers, an auditioned chamber choir and a youth choir at McDaniel High School. We partner with Portland State University, and we started a monthly giving campaign to build a steady budget so we can keep growing and serving Portland’s Latino/a/x/e community.
Many of our singers also study voice with me, and I love that crossover. The skills they build in lessons show up in rehearsal, and the joy of the choir keeps them coming back to lessons.
I feel blessed and grateful to everyone who supports this work — singers, composers, community partners, and the funders who gave us seed money: Milagro Theatre, Tualatin Creates and Seeding Justice. I’m moved by your enthusiasm and your trust in my vision for an arts organization led through a Latino/a/x/e lens.

Mi camino con el Latinx Choral Project
En abril de 2023, me invitaron a dirigir el Coro de Afinidad Latinx de las Escuelas Públicas de Portland (PPS) en el estreno mundial de El Agua de Mi Ser, escrita por Luz Elena Mendoza Ramos, cantante, compositora y voz principal de la banda portlandesa Y La Bamba. El coro reunió a estudiantes Latino/a/x/e con cantantes adultos. Me mostró cuántas personas en Portland buscaban un lugar donde cantar la música de su propia cultura.
Era la primera vez en más de dos décadas que dirigía un proyecto centrado en esta parte de mi identidad, y fue emocionante. Esa experiencia cambió el rumbo de mi carrera. Supe con certeza que quería invertir mis conocimientos y mi experiencia en mi comunidad Latino/a/x/e. El proyecto terminó esa primavera, pero puso en marcha los acontecimientos que me llevaron a fundar el Latinx Choral Project.
En lugar de esperar a que el financiamiento me abriera las puertas, invertí $2,500 de mi propio dinero para comenzar. En febrero de 2025, lancé el Latinx Choral Project con 20 cantantes. Para junio, el coro ya tenía más de 60. Juntos recaudamos $5,500 para iniciar el proceso de convertirnos en una organización sin fines de lucro, y en febrero de 2026 LCP obtuvo su estatus 501(c)(3).

Muchos de nuestros cantantes también estudian canto conmigo, y me encanta esa conexión. Las habilidades que desarrollan en sus clases se notan en los ensayos, y la alegría del coro los motiva a seguir con sus clases.
